LUCY: Starship pics and update
on Lucy
"Lucy has had a good weekend:
she has even been up from her bed and walked down to the
activities room here in
the Ward and done some painting.
She is on a constant array
of drugs fed in through her drip - the chemotherapy drugs
including steroids to attack
the leukemia - and two anti-fungal drugs plus anti-biotics
for this dreaded aspergillus.
Every four hours she takes
other drugs orally and her mother has found a way to make
it a game. Not easy because they
are vomit-inducing in combination.
Lucy was admitted to
Starship last Sunday after the Lifeflight journey - yesterday
was the best we have seen her and her
condition inspires hope.
We know the prognosis is bad but
where hope endures - and the prayers and thoughts of those
wishing her well - then
Lucy lives. Her key date is Tuesday when she is put under
a general anaesthetic again and has a lumbar punch and
a CT scan and, I think, another bone marrow biopsy.
One
of the specialists says that Lucy "is not in the
textbook" and that they know of only one other case
(In Glasgow, Scotland) of a child actually presenting with
aspergillus at the start of leukemia. That she has virtually
no leukemia-free bone marrow, and almost no white blood
cells, also intrigues them.
You get the feeling that my
golden girl should be dead already according to the books.
But she is not. And as
these photos show she is still very much the spirited little
girl that we so adore and love.
More tomorrow. Please pray
for Lucy. We need a miracle but, ironically, there is plenty
of emperical proof that
miracles do happen.
Thank you to everyone for their kind
wishes. Leo and I - and Lucy - really appreciate it."
