MICHAEL LAWS
LUCY'S DADDY

UPDATE ON LUCY – Monday, 24 March 2009

I'm starting to get concerned.

Lucy has been here, in hospital, since Thursday and is showing no real signs of improvement. Her latest blood tests show both her neutrophils and white blood counts at approx half their level of 24 hours ago.

Her chemo has been discontinued and she appeared to have an allergic reaction to the introduction of a third type of anti-biotic this morning. She suddenly started itching, broke out in a nasty, red rash over her face, neck and chest and became extremely agitated and upset.

Fortunately (!), her mother was here and I missed most of that - but walked in on the conclusion. A dose of phenergan and the discontinuance of the drip and her equilibrium soon returned.

We had a chat with our Starship specialist this afternoon: We're both concerned at no discernible improvement despite everything. Certainly this isn't going to be over tomorrow. Although ... Lucy obeys no rules.

It's a funny existence. Confined in this room for 23 hours a day and then spend the hour going manic trying to get groceries, clothing etc. The domestic situation is complicated by Theo's and Zoe's still not being 100%, and nor is their Mum.

Mum has decided that part of the reason for Lucy not eating is hospital food and is cooking up a new batch of home meals this afternoon. They never last: the older kids like them too, and even I've bden known to dabble! Kids have GREAT food and brilliant snacks.

Won't be on radio tomorrow but may make the short council meeting to endorse the dradft Ten Year Plan comms strategy. Shouldn't take more than two minutes but ...

Will update more on Lucy tomorrow.

Cheers
Michael
