LUCY'S DADDY
UPDATE ON LUCY - Friday, 15 May 2009
Since my last update, big changes for the family unit but Lucy has sailed serenely on. She's even been to Bizzy Bee a couple of times this week with younger sister, Zoe - and positively thrived.
I took her into Wanganui hospital yesterday to have her bloods done and there was not a cry nor a tear. She showed Zoe around and pointed out all the pictures of the animals, and was as chirpy as she's ever been. So that's good news.
Since I last penned a diary note for Lucy ... there have been some fairly big changes.
On the political/work front, I've been consumed with the Wanganui 'H' issue and then the passage of the anti-gang legislation. But on the personal side, it has been sorting through the exit passages of my relationship with Leo and establishing an environment for the children.
In the end, Leo has moved to a new residence and I have taken over the family home with a shared care arrangement for the kiddies, and joint custody.
The girls see this as an 'adventure' and that's how it has been sold to them by both of us. They like having two homes and they're only a couple of hundred metres apart and they see us daily. We still do some things as a family, and wll continue to do so.
It was a bit hairy there for a wee while (all separations are fraught) but Leo & I are constructing a convivial relationship and hopefully, a friendship. We both accept that the care and consideration of our children is paramount and that is the motivating force in our decisons. So far, so good.
Lucy has been to Starship for her usual lumbar punch procedyre, the injection of the chemo to her spine, the 5-day burst of steroids (the worst part) and is now back on her daily chemo regime. They've reduced her daily chemo dosage by 25% and I think they thought that the increased chemo may have been too much for her immunity. At the present levels though, she is doing well.
She has developed into a wilful child: and I'm pleased about that. Give me spirited over supine any day! Takes after her mother! She also has an enormous capacity to love, and I see that with Zoe and particularly her younger brother, Theo, every day. But also her parents - she snuggled into bed with me last night - the rain pouring down outside - and said "I love you, Daddy." I melted.
She has enjoyed being home again (OK, two homes) and with the family. Ella's arrival home from Poland and Israel just cemented that feeling.
I have no doubt that the prayers and thoughts of everyone helped Lucy through her latest episode. As I've always said: three things saved and save Lucy. Expert medical attention, prayers and her indomitable spirit. It took all three and it took all three - despite our personal trials - this last time.
Thank you. I shall keep posting updates because I know that your goodwill is not only sincere, but it materially assists my golden girl. God bless.
Best wishes
Michael.
