PRESS RELEASEE
MICHAEL LAWS
MAYOR

WANGANUI DISTRICT COUNCIL

MAYOR WELCOMES GANG PATCH CONVICTION

The conviction of Mongrel Mob leader Randal Nahona for breaching the legislative ban on gang insignia in Wanganui – with a subsequent fine and confiscation of the clothing – “shows the law is working as everyone intended and is being backed up by both the Police and the courts”.

“This is an excellent outcome and proves the Police and council viewpoint, that both the act and by-law give them an extra and effective tool to police gangs. You could not hope for a better start.”

Mayor Laws said it was a double irony that the Mongrel Mob leader had been the first conviction, “because it was his vicious beating by Hells Angels members in early 2006 that convinced council to act. We had had enough of gang feuds spilling over into public places”.

As well as the Mongrel Mob leader’s conviction, three other persons have been arrested and face criminal charges – from the Mongrel Mob, Tribesmen and Hells Angels respectively.

“The message is getting through: there is a law, it has strong community support, and the Police and the courts will uphold it.”
