PRESS RELEASEE
MICHAEL LAWS
MAYOR

WANGANUI DISTRICT COUNCIL

Bodybuilding competition a first for Wanganui: Mayoress Leonie to enter novice figure section

The hosting of Wanganui’s first national bodybuilding and physique competition for over twenty years - – the River City Classic - “is warmly welcomed, and will contribute to our city maintaining its nationwide reputation as an events city” says Mayor Michael Laws.

The competition will be held at the Wanganui Collegiate Auditorium this Saturday with pre-judging at 11.30am and the public show and prizegiving from 5.00pm.

Mayoress Leonie Brookhammer has entered the “novice figure” section of the competition, and is likely to be the only sitting mayoress ever to have entered such a contest.

The 40 year old mother-of-five is not the only local government representative to be entering the body beautiful stakes. Current Napier city councillor John Cocking recently won the masters section of the Hawke’s Bay competition. And All Black great Jonah Lomu recently popularized the sport with his second placing at the Wellington championships.

The New Zealand Bodybuilding/Physique Championships will be held in Auckland a week after the Wanganui contest, so many competitors will be using this event as a practice run.  Wanganui also gets the opportunity to qualify its own reps this Saturday for both the nationals in 2009 and 2010.

“   We have had outstanding athletics, literary, glass and motorcycle and jet sprint  events this year. This latest addition to the Wanganui calendar will provide some spring glamour and quite an entertainment spectacle.”
