SOUTHERN ENTRANCEWAY: GATEWAY WILL BE BEST IN NEW ZEALAND
“We are going to have the best entrance to any city anywhere in New Zealand!”
That is the aim of Mayor Michael Laws after the council signed off on the southern entranceway plans at its full Council meeting on Friday afternoon.
Mayor Laws had been to visit Transport Minister Steven Joyce last month “to ensure that we have design trumping NZ Transport Agency rules – and that appears to be the new reality. A happy marriage between exciting design and road safety.”
Void Architecture architect Mark Southcombe and Infrastructure Manager Julian Reweti report the updated design. Council now must determine the final design of the “welcome sculpture” – an architectural exclamation mark that welcomes visitors off the Marybank straight at the Putiki corner and the intersections of Wikitoria Road and SH4.
The final designs are enclosed. Council will make a final decision and tree planting will begin shortly.
