PRESS RELEASEE
MICHAEL LAWS
MAYOR
WANGANUI DISTRICT COUNCIL
New Visitor Information Centre to be chosen
A special and open council meeting will be held on Monday afternoon, 5 October, to choose the winning design for the new Wanganui Visitor Information Centre to be located in the Old Town/riverfront area.
“ Wanganui has needed a new, better sited and more user-friendly visitor centre for decades,” says Mayor Laws. “Finally we are going to get one. Our aim is to have the design chosen, the contract placed and the new centre in operation by spring/summer 2010.”
Mayor Laws says that the Old Town/riverfront area had been chosen as the ideal location because it was fast becoming “the heart of Wanganui with its historic buildings, riverfront walkway, PS Waimarie and river market attractions, and the Ucol development. A review of street design in the area, and the creation of new parking will likely follow Monday’s decision.”
“ If we are serious about being a family-friendly city – and attracting new residents and visitors – then we need a new visitor centre that is not just centrally located but an experience all of its own.”
There are three competing designs from the following architects/design companies – Craig Dalgleish (Dalgleish Architects), Bruce Dickson (DLA Architects) and Mark Southcombe (Void Architecture). The detailed designs have been out for public consultation and are available from –
