PRESS RELEASE
MICHAEL LAWS
MAYOR
WANGANUI DISTRICT COUNCIL
COUNCIL'S PORT SAFETY CONCERNS JUSTIFIED - OSH
Mayor Michael Laws today said that council’s concerns over safety issues at Wanganui’s Port “were completely justified”.
A meeting took place yesterday, between senior council officers and the Department of Labour’s Health and Safety Inspector and Service Manager. The Department’s report on structure and associated safety issues at the Port was received and discussed.
“At the meeting it was confirmed that Health and Safety responsibilities lie with River City Port Ltd (RCP). The report shows RCP have clearly not met their responsibilities in this area.
“Where issues are being addressed it is done through isolating hazards rather than eliminating them. This short-term approach is reducing the scale of operations at the Port, not developing this asset for Wanganui’s benefit.”

A memo summarising the meeting with the Department of Labour (DoL) and the DoL’s report summary is attached.
