PRESS RELEASE
MICHAEL LAWS
MAYOR

WANGANUI DISTRICT COUNCIL

UNVEILING OF PERMANENT MEMORIAL TO TANIA McKENZIE

Mayor Michael Laws today said that a permanent memorial to the late Tania McKenzie will be unveiled at 2.00pm on Saturday, December 12.

“Since her brutal murder on her 20th birthday in 2005, Tania’s family and friends have maintained an unofficial memorial to her on the Somme Parade riverbank near the Dublin Street Bridge,” Mayor Laws said.

“In March the Wanganui District Council approved the placement of a permanent plaque in memory of Tania at that site.

“This Saturday Tania’s family will unveil the permanent bronze plaque and I had no hesitation in personally offering to meet those costs. We all recognise the terrible loss suffered by her family and I am pleased to be able to attend the unveiling to offer the council’s continuing support to them.”

The plaque will read:

In loving memory of
Tania Rebecka McKenzie
7 January 1985 - 7 January 2005
“no shadow can extinguish her light”
loved daughter, granddaughter, sister & friend

ENDS

The media is invited to attend the unveiling at 2.00pm on Saturday, December 12. It will be held – wet or dry – just down from the Dublin Street Bridge on Somme Parade opposite the river. It was the site from where Tania’s body was recovered.
