PRESS RELEASE
MICHAEL LAWS
MAYOR

WANGANUI DISTRICT COUNCIL

OPUNAKE PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS TO BE THANKED BY MAYOR

On Tuesday, December 15, Mayor Michael Laws will host a special reception for student representatives from Opunake Primary School, in recognition of their generous donation to the Samoa Tsunami Appeal.

When students from the school heard about the devastating tsunami, they set about raising money to help the relief efforts. Each of the nine classes at the school chose a different fundraising activity including a sausage sizzle, games afternoon and a bring and buy table.

The students raised a total of $1,557 and chose to donate it to Wanganui’s Samoa Tsunami Appeal.

Members of the school’s student council will visit Wanganui for the day on December 15. First stop is a free visit to the Splash Centre before heading to the Council Chambers for a lunchtime reception.

Mayor Laws is looking forward to thanking the students personally for their fundraising efforts.

“The response of Opunake Primary School students to the Samoan Tsunami Appeal has been fantastic. The money they raised is a significant sum and is already being well spent.

“Our reconstruction team in Samoa has been sending updates on their work which I will share with the students.

“In addition to providing a new communal dwelling for the village, we have been able to send over supplies and toys for the children in the village. I know the students will be pleased to hear how their money is being used.”

Mayor Laws will spend time with the students and present a plaque to thank them for their outstanding fundraising efforts and generosity.
